“[Zahed Sultan] goes meta – experiencing the crowd, experiencing him.” – The Arab Times
Breakbeats and dub meet the sounds of Brazil’s Northeast in the this special musical hybrid from producer, bandleader and musician DJ Dolores, which reunites his original band Orchestra Santa Massa in a blind date with his newest project, Frevotron. Described by RootsWorld as “a field recording made in a space station”, Orchestra Santa Massa mixes laptop and MPC with rustic rabeca (fiddle) and maracatu drumming to worldwide acclaim, winning a BBC World Music Award with its debut album. In Frevotron, DJ Dolores experiments with pyrotechnic master saxophonist Mestre Spok and Latin Grammy-winning guitarist Yuri Queiroga to deconstruct the carnival music of Recife and Olinda. DJ Dolores, who grew out of Pernambuco’s mangue beat scene of the ‘90’s, has toured globally, playing at festivals such as Glastonbury, WOMAD, Montreal Jazz Festival, Roskilde, and globalFEST, and has scored numerous films, dance pieces and theatrical works.
“DJ Dolores used a computer and turntables to generate electronic beats and bass lines, while rabeca tunes and vocals could turn into folksy hooks for dance tracks, seize the foreground or shift toward new-wave rock. “ – The New York Times
